Why do the people in the SAARC countries share the aspiration for democracy.?

Democracy is a form of government in which citizens of a certain nation select their own representatives for making decisions that affect society as a whole. It is characterized by legal equality, political freedom and the rule of law. The SAARC countries have faced a mixed democratic experience over time. For example, India was under colonial rule and on gaining freedom became a socialist democratic country. In spite of their experiences, surveys have shown that the people of the SAARC countries view democracy positively and there is widespread support for the same. According to popular opinion, democracy is viewed as a transparent political system providing freedom of expression and public opinion and believing in negotiations and discussions. The positive characteristics of democracy make people in the SAARC countries aspire for it.
