Is it easy to describe a State but hard to define? Why?

‘The Indian people had a brief experience of authoritarian rule during an emergency.’ Justify.


A state is a community of people which is easy to describe but hard to define. This is due to the following reasons:

a. A nation is found on the basis of common cultural, historical and political institution like a shared religion, language, ethnicity, history or regional culture.


b. There are some exceptions to this.


c. A nation is a community that has a state of its own.


d. State feel threatened by cultural diversity and adopt assimilation or Integration policies to create a harmonious society

‘The Indian people had a brief experience of authoritarian rule during an emergency.’ This statement is justified below:


a. A National Emergency was introduced between June 1975 and January 1977.


b. The Parliament was suspended.


c. The government directly made new laws,


d. Civil liberties were revoked.


e. Many politically active people were arrested and sent to jail without any trial.


f. The media was censored.


g. The government officials were dismissed without any normal procedures.
