Q3 of 39 Page 138

Name the following conditions:

(i) Passage of much glucose in urine ………………………

(ii) Overdose of insulin makes the diabetic patient unconscious ………………………………………………

(i) Diabetes mellitus

Explanation: Due to deficiency of insulin hormone excess glucose cannot be converted into glycogen hence excess sugar is excreted in urine. This condition is called as Diabetes mellitus.

Note: Insufficient secretion of insulin causes diabetes mellitus and the condition is known as hyperglycemia due to the high level of sugar in blood.

(ii) Insulin shock

Explanation: Excess secretion of insulin lowers the sugar level in the blood, as a result, the patient may become unconscious and this condition is called insulin shock or hypoglycemia.

Note: During this condition a prompt bite of sweet (eg. candy or sweet biscuit) is helpful, this raises the sugar level in blood thus equalizing the level of insulin.
