Since the vertices are on x-axis the equation will be of the form

Where a is the semi-major axis.

Given that a = 5, c = ± 4

Therefore, from the relation

c²= a² – b², we get

16 = 25 – b²

or b = 3

Hence, the equation of the ellipse is

= 1.
