Find the equation for the ellipse that satisfies the given conditions: Foci
(± 3, 0), a = 4


Since the foci are on the x-axis, the major axis will be on x-axis. The equation will be of the form

= 1

Given c = ± 3; a = 4

Therefore, c2 = a2 – b2 ⇒ 9 – 16 – b

or b2 = 7 ⇒ b =

Hence, the equation of then ellipse is

= 1.
