Since the vertices are on x-axis, the equation will be of the form

where a is the semi-major axis.

Given that a = 6, c = ± 4

Therefore from the relation

c² = a² – b², we get

16 = 36 – b²

⇒ b² = 20 or b = 2

Hence, the equation of the ellipse is
