What do you understand by the term ‘Benami Transfers’?

The rural people are engaged in various rural activities or farm activities. The primary activity in rural areas is agriculture and allied activities. Other activities include horticulture, fisheries, poultry, dairy products production, cattle rearing, small scale industries like cottage industries, bamboo sticks, woodworks, and tobacco industry and some non-farm activities nowadays like transportation or craft manufacturing.

The agriculture is based on seasons and is less profitable for the farmer and the other small scale industries generate fewer profits.

This was one of the major loopholes of the land reform movement through which the large landowners belonging to upper caste were able to escape from having their surplus land take over by the state. The landowners managed to divide the land among their relatives and others including the servants, in so-called ‘Benami Transfers’.

This allowed them to control over the land which was not theirs in fact not in their name and hence they took advantage over the poor people by making them poorer.
