How does regionalism get established in the Indian context?

The cultural diversity means differences between different cultures, traditions, social groups, and communities. The cultural diversity can possess challenges to the national unity because of the following reasons:

1. Due to differences in the ideology, cultural diversity can arouse passions and are often able to mobilize large numbers of people.

2. Sometimes cultural differences are accompanied by economic and social inequalities and this complicates things.

So the difficulties may be created by competition or conflict when the diverse communities are also part of a larger entity like a nation.

Regionalism in the Indian context is rooted in India's diversity of cultures, communities, tribes, and, religions. After independence, the government carried on the with the British-Indian arrangement dividing India into large provinces, called presidencies. But soon after the adoption of the constitution, all the units of the colonial era had to be reorganized and as a result, the state organization commission was formed. Language coupled with regional and tribal identity provided as the most powerful instrument for the formation of ethnonational identity in India. This is how regionalism got established in Indian society.
