Why was Dharma Sabha formed?

Dharma Sabha was formed as a result of a counter-movement by the defenders of “sati”, a practice in the Hindu religion of burning the widow with her husband's body. When Raja Rammohan Roy campaigned against sati and formed Brahmo Samaj the supporters of sati started a counter movement against his movement to protect the cruel practice of burning wives alive along with their dead husband.
