Evaluate the outcomes of family planning programme during the emergency.

• In order to curb the population growth family planning programs are being initiated. The Indira Gandhi’s government had implemented a forced sterilization programme which was too expensive.

• The family planning programme suffered a setback during the years of national emergency because the government tried to bring down the growth rate of the population by coercive measures of mass sterilization.

• During the emergency period, massive camps were organized where the government officials were ordered to bring people for sterilization.

• As a result, there was widespread opposition from the opposition parties.

Hence the programme was abandoned by the elected government after the emergency period. The programme is still criticized in India and is blamed for creating a public aversion to family planning.
