Q1 of 108 Page 46

Find the lowest common multiple of the following expressions:

x2 – 1; (x2 + 1) (x + 1) and x2 + x –1

Let u(x) = (x2 – 1) = (x + 1) (x – 1)

Let v(x) = (x2 + 1) (x + 1)

Let w(x) = x2 + x –1

By comparing u(x), v(x) and w(x),

The LCM is = (x + 1) (x – 1) (x2 + 1) (x2 + x –1)

= (x2 – 1) (x2 + 1) (x2 + x –1)

= (x4 – 1) (x2 + x –1)
