Q1 of 35 Page 143

Answer the question briefly:

'This is all the world he needs'. Why didn't Putnam want Freddie to step out of the gate?

Mr. Putnam did not want Freddie to step out of the gate because the world outside, he believed, was cruel and ruthless. They either laughed at his disabilities or pitied him for it, none of which were acceptable to Mr. Putnam. Such sympathy or mockery would only break his son down instead of helping him grow. This is why Mr. Putnam did not want his son to step anywhere beyond the gates of his three-acre home.
