Effective Learning
Schools are often called temples of learning. They are the places where an individual is expected to grow from a child to a responsible citizen of the nation. By learning and by maturing, we do not refer only to passing in examinations, but to honing the all-round potential of a student. Schools are essentially the stepping stones in a child’s life towards their future.
In such a scenario, it is essential for schools to take up the task of effective learning seriously. There must be an approach towards effective teaching and learning because all children are not the same. Conventional methods of teaching must be replaced by alternate modes of learning. By confining the student to the blackboard and chalk, schools curb the creativity within a child.
Instead, the primary role of a school must be to develop creativity and innovation within them. We tend to learn from our social and cultural system, and this is best taught through examples, stories, films or visits to the local museum. Computers can replace teachers for some lessons where an audio-visual documentary can allow better seepage of knowledge.
Students tend to learn, from their very early days, from their parents and grandparents, through stories, habits and examples. The same can be applied in schools. They can be made to develop the habit of visiting the library, which is an excellent source of learning. They can learn a lot from their peer group, who can come up with knowledge on advanced technologies and sciences because they tend to use it more often. Whatever be the medium used, it should always be kept in mind that one can learn effectively only when one is learning to learn, not for marks or competition. De-schooling can prove effective, and take the student away from the pressure and hum-drum of the competitive school life. The focus must always be on effective learning.
