Cade wants Freddie to learn a lot of things. He wants Freddie to learn words and their meanings. He wants Freddie to remember these words even without pictures to support them. Besides, he also wants Freddie to read sentences, and even books. He also wants him to learn the arithmetic. If not anything else, he expects to be able to teach Freddie how to write his own name.

Cade wanted Freddie to do all of this because he had been appointed by Mr. Putnam as his teacher, and it was his duty to make Freddie reach at par with the standards of reading and writing expected from him. He wanted to prove himself a good teacher and enable Freddie to be able to face the ruthless world.

Freddie did not agree with Cade all the time. He preferred pictures to words, and found sentences difficult to read for there were too many words. He also wished to be allowed to play out rather than be locked within and having to study. He wanted to go to Carter the handyman and fix tires or make boxes with him, or play with his nephew Joey, rather than trying to read long sentences.
