The nomenclature of restriction endonuclease follows a general pattern.


• The first letter is the name of genus in which a given enzyme is discovered is written in capital.


• This is followed by first two letter of species name of organism.


• These three letters are generally written in italics.


eg. Eco from Escherichia coli


Hin from Haemophilus influenza


• Fourth letter represent strain or type identification.
