A rectangular plot is 40 m long and 16 m broad. A road of a uniform width of 2 m surrounds the plot inside it. Find the cost of paving the road with bricks at Rs. 15 per m2 and also find the cost of covering the remaining part of the plot with grass at Rs. 9 per m2 ?

The Area of the rectangle = l × b


The total area of the rectangle = 40 × 16 = 640 m2


Length of inside rectangle = 40 - 2(2) = 36 m


Breadth of inside rectangle = 16 - 2(2) = 12m


Area of inside rectangle = 36 × 12 = 432 m2


Area of road = 640 – 432 = 208 m2


Cost of paving = 15 × 208 = Rs. 3120


Cost of grass = 9 × 432 = Rs. 3888
