Q16 of 19 Page 191

How many cubes of side 2 cm can be packed in a cubical box with inner side equal to 4 cm?

The Volume of a cube = a3 where a is side of the cube

Given side of the smaller cube is 2 cm and the bigger cube is 4 cm

Volume of the bigger cube = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64 cm3

Volume of the smaller cube = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8 cm3

Let the number of such smaller cubes be x, so in order to completely pack both cubes, total volume of smaller cubes is equal to volume of bigger cube.

8 x = 64

x = 8

Therefore, 8 such cubes are required.
