The British took upon themselves the task of town planning from the early years of their rule in Bengal as they didn’t believe in the sovereignty of Nawab of Bengal, who had attacked the British fort.

The British decided to clean the Indian part of the city because it was crowded, had dirty tanks, excessive vegetation, the smell of poor drainage system. The two steps taken to clean Calcutta was:


They created open spaces in the city to make it more healthier.


They cleared many Ghats, bazaars, tanneries and burial-grounds were cleared as part of town-planning and cleaning project.
