The Amara-Nayaka system was a major political innovation of the Vijayanagara Empire. This system was probably based on the taqt system from Delhi Sultanate. The Amara-Nayaka were given a part of land to govern and it was there duty to collect taxes from the peasants, craftsman, merchant, etc. Some of this tax was retained by the Amara-Nayaka for personal use and for maintaining a stipulated contingents of horses and elephants. These contingents helped Vijayanagara rulers to fight in battles and gain a control over the southern peninsula. Some of the tax retain was also, used for maintaining temples and irrigation.
