In a Mughal household a distinction between wives was made:

• The wives who came from royal household (beghams) were given more attention and monthly allowances than the wives who were not of noble birth(aghas).


• The aghas could also rise up to the level of beghams, depending upon the husband’s will. Love and motherhood played a huge role in altering the female hierarchy in the Mughal household.
