In a Mughal household a distinction between wives was made:

The wives who came from royal household (beghams) were given more attention and monthly allowances than the wives who were not of noble birth(aghas).


The aghas could also rise up to the level of beghams, depending upon the husband’s will. Love and motherhood played a huge role in altering the female hierarchy in the Mughal household.
