Which part in the stem, the xylem or the phloem, is located deeper internally?

The xylem is located deep internally so as to prevent excessive water loss through transpiration from the lenticels (lenticular transpiration).

Note: lenticels are the tiny openings found on the stem of the plants and trees through which transpiration occurs.
