Q1 of 67 Page 48

Name the following:

The pressure which is responsible for the movement of water molecules across the cortical cells of the root.

The pathway of inflow of water absorbed by the root hair to the xylem vessel is through the cortical region. As the root hair cells take up water the cell becomes isotonic but the adjacent cell is in hypertonic condition thus water passes from the root hair cell to the adjacent cell. This process carries on till the water reaches the xylem which increases the absorption of water from outside the cell giving rise to a pressure which helps in pushing the cell sap known as the root pressure.
