Loss of water through a cut stem.

Bleeding is the term given to the oozing out of cell sap from the cut in the plant. This loss of cell sap is facilitated by the root pressure which induces the uptake of water by the roots and increases pressure so that the sap is carried upward and when the stem is cut this sap moves out giving the impression of bleeding.
