Osmosis is the passage of water across a semi-permeable membrane from the region of higher concentration of water to a region of lower concentration. The concentration of the cell sap is very high thus water enters the cells from the soil. The cell membrane here acts as the semi-permeable membrane thus blocking the soil particles from entering and allowing free passage to water.
