Examine whether the following equations are quadratic equations or not:

(x — 2)(x + 3) = 0

⇒ x2 + 3x – 2x – 6 = 0


⇒ x2 + x – 6 = 0


Comparing equation x2 + x – 6 = 0 with ax2 + bx + c = 0 we get


a = 1, b = 1 and c = – 6


Here a, b, c ∈ R and a ≠ 0


The degree of polynomial x2 + x – 6 = 0 is 2


Hence (x — 2)(x + 3) = 0 is a quadratic equation
