Q1 of 83 Page 85

Find the discriminant of the following quadratic equations and discuss the nature of the roots:

x2 + x + 1 = 0

Comparing equation x2 + x + 1 = 0 with ax2 + bx + c = 0 we get

a = 1, b = 1 and c = 1

Discriminant (D) = b2 – 4ac

⇒ D = 12 – 4(1)(1)

⇒ D = 1 – 4

⇒ D = – 3

As D < 0 equation x2 + x + 1 = 0 has no real solution
