How is respiration different from breathing? Explain the process of aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration.


AEROBIC RESPIRATION: When the process of respiration takes place in presence of Oxygen, it is called aerobic respiration. In aerobic respiration, the 6 carbon Glucose molecule is converted or broken down to 3 carbon Pyruvate in the cytoplasm. This pyruvate now in the presence of oxygen converts into Carbon Dioxide, water, and energy.


Glucose(6C) Pyruvate(3C) Carbon Dioxide(2C) + Water + Energy


ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION: When the process of respiration takes place in the absence of oxygen, it is known as anaerobic respiration. The glucose breaks down into pyruvate in the cytoplasm. This pyruvate now in the absence of oxygen will convert into 2 carbon molecule that is Ethanol with by-products as carbon dioxide and energy. The amount of energy produced is much lesser than the energy produced in aerobic respiration. This occurs in yeast.
