Q7 of 90 Page 113

Which is the internal energy reserve in plants? Do animals have the same energy reserve? Justify your answer.

The internal energy reserve in plants is Starch.

The animals do not have the same energy reserve. The energy stored in the animals is in the form of glycogen.

Explanation:

i. If we will see the chemical structure of both glycogen and starch, it will show that the number of branches are more in glycogen as compared to the starch.

ii. More branches result in fast and quick transport. Hence, more sugar will be transported in animals.

iii. The starch cannot be easily mobilized due to fewer branches and hence resulting in slow metabolism rate.

iv. Glycogen is a smaller molecule and can be broken down easily as compared to starch.

v. Hence, animals have glycogen as energy reserve not starch.
