Q31 of 90 Page 113

If cells of onion peel and RBC are separately kept in hypotonic solution what among the following will take place? Explain the reason for your answer.

Onion peel in hypotonic solution:

• If the onion peel is kept in the hypotonic solution, the process of endosmosis will occur resulting in the swelling of the cell.

• Endosmosis is the process in which the fluid flows through a membrane to a region of higher concentration.

• The onion peel is a plant cell which has a cell wall.

• Hence the cell wall protects the cell from bursting.

RBC in the hypotonic solution:

When RBC is kept in the hypotonic solution, the cell will burst. The bursting will occur due to the absence of cell wall cause RBC is an animal cell and do not possess any cell wall.
