How do homologous organs represent divergent evolution? Explain with the help of a suitable example.

Homologous organs are those structures that are anatomically similar or similar in structure however differ in their use vastly. For example, the flipper of a whale and the limbs of humans are similar in structure however their functions differ vastly.

Homologous organs depict a shared ancestor amongst the organisms which means that their origin was the same but as they diverged or moved away, they adapted the use of their organs accordingly to best suit their environment. That is, they used their similar structures to perform different functions.
