More than 25 % of human population is suffering from hunger and malnutrition. One of the alternate sources of proteins for animal and human nutrition is Single Cell Protein (SCP). Spirulina is one such microbe which is grown on an industrial scale as source of good protein.

Spirulina can be grown easily on materials like waste water containing starch, straw, molasses, animal manure and even sewage. It is used as food which is rich in protein, minerals, fats, carbohydrates, and vitamins. Its growth on waste product so, it also reduces environmental pollution.
