Why did the villagers of Orissa protest against setting up of industries ?

OR

Highlight any two features of the system of mixed economy in India.

The first protest by the villagers of Orissa against setting up of industries occurred in Dhinkia village of Orissa. The villagers of this region protested against the forceful acquisition of land for industrial purposes by the state administration because according to them the area was one of the most fertile regions in Orissa. It contributed a major bulk in Orissa’s agricultural output. According to the villagers, it was a scam to acquire these fertile lands for industries when other less fertile areas were available.

From a ‘laissez faire’ economy in the pre-Independence era, the Indian economy converted to a mixed economy system post-Independence. This system gave it the following two features –

• Co-existence of public and private sectors.

• Planned development helped to strengthen the weak Indian economy post-Independence. India established the concept of 5 Year Plans to rebuild the agrarian economy and create foundations for the industrial and scientific progress of the country.
