Six steps which should be taken to make the UN more relevant in the changing context are as follows –

• Creation of a Peace Building Commission.

• Establishment of a Human Rights Council and this has been operational since 19^th June, 2006.

• Agreements to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

• Acceptance of responsibility of the international community in case of failures of national governments to protect their own citizens against atrocities.

• Condemnation of all forms and manifestations of terrorism.

• Creation of a democracy fund.

India has several reasons behind supporting the restructuring of the UN on several grounds.

• India is of the believe that a restructured UN would be revitalized and strengthened which is a desirable character for an institution like the UN in this changing world.

• India believes that the UN should have an enhanced role in promoting development and cooperation among different nations which is only possible with restructuring the present form of UN. According to India, by making development as the central agenda, the UN would be able to maintain international peace and security.

• The representation of nations is skewed between the UN General Assembly and the Security Council. While the membership for the Assembly has increased over time, the same has remained static for the Council. The Assembly members are also mostly developing countries. Therefore, India has argued for the restructuring of the UN as it would allow the developing countries to have a more decisive role in the actions of the Security Council.

• One of the biggest reasons behind India’s support of the restructuring of the UN is its want for a permanent membership on the Council. It would not only have symbolic importance but also be influential while conducting foreign policies.
