If one root of the quadratic equation 3x2 – ax + 4 = 0 is 4. Find the value of a.

The root of an equation must satisfy the equation.

∴ If 4 is a root of the given equation, then,


3(4)2 – 4a + 4 = 0


48 – 4a + 4 = 0


-4a + 52 = 0 ⇒ -4a = -52



a = 13


Hence, the value of a is 13.
