A person spent rupees 564 in buying pens and pencils pens cost is 7 rupees and each pencil cost is 3 rupees and if the total no of things bought was 108 how many each type did he buy?

Let the number of pens be x.

Total no. of things bought = 108


number of pencils = 108 – x


Cost of one pen = Rs 7


cost of x pens = 7x


Cost of 1 pencil = Rs 3


cost of (108 – x) pencils = 3(108 – x)


According to the question


7x + 3(108 – x) = 564


7x + 324 – 3x = 564


4x + 324 = 564


4x = 564 – 324



x = 60


So,


Number of pens = 60


Number of pencils = 108 – x = 108 – 60 = 48.
