Ritu is four times as old as his brother Raju. In 4 years time her age will be twice of Raju's age. What are their present ages?

Let us assume, the present age of Ritu is x years and the present age of Raju is y years.

Given:


x = 4y ……(i)


Also after 4 years,


⇒ x + 4 = 2 (y + 4)


⇒ x + 4 = 2y + 8


⇒ x – 2y = 4 …… (ii)


Substitute the value of x from equation (i) in equation (ii),


⇒ 4y – 2y = 4


⇒ 2y = 4


⇒ y = 2 years


Therefore, x = 4y = 4 × 2 = 8 years


Hence, the present age of Ritu is 8 years and the age of Raju is 2 years.
