Given below are certain structures, write the term for the functional activity.

(a) Blood platelets and __________

(b) Neutrophils and __________

(c) Erythrocytes and __________

(d) Lymphocytes and __________

(e) Bone marrow and __________

(a) Blood platelets and Blood clotting

Blood platelets play an important role in clotting blood. At the site of injury, the platelets disintegrate to release a chemical substance thrombokinase which initiates the process of clotting.

(b) Neutrophils and phagocytosis

Neutrophils are granular white blood cells whose main function is to engulf bacteria by phagocytosis.

(c) Erythrocytes and oxygen carriers

Erythrocytes specializes in carrying oxygen with the help of a respiratory pigment called hemoglobin. Erythrocytes lack nucleus, mitochondria & endoplasmic reticulum which makes it more efficient oxygen carriers.

(d) Lymphocytes and Antibodies production

Lymphocytes are agranular white blood cells whose main function is to produce antibodies which kill or neutralize the germs.

(e) Bone marrow and blood platelets production

Blood platelets are derived from some giant cells called megakaryocytes in the red bone marrow. These are then budded off from megakaryocytes.
