Describe the main features of the constitution of 1791 drafted by the national assembly.

By 1791, national assembly completed the drafting of the constitution. The main features of the constitution of 1791 were:

• The main feature of the constitution was to limit the power or the authority of the king. It should rather be given to the different institutions which are legislative, executive and judiciary.

• Only the active citizens who were men above 25 years and pays taxes had the right to vote. Remaining are the passive citizens and women and children are not allowed to vote.

• Active citizens are the electors; they could vote for the judge who is the part of the judiciary and also votes for the members of the national assembly which is the part of the legislature. Executive includes king who chooses the ministers and both king and ministers are controlled by the national assembly.

• The constitution mentioned various rights of man and citizens which are the natural rights of man and cannot be taken away from them. These rights were - Right to life, Right of speech, Freedom of opinion and Equality before the law.
