Why were the images and symbols used in the 18th century in France?

In order to communicate important thoughts and ideas symbols were used frequently. In the 18th century, several images and symbols used in France which were:

The broken chain – Chains were used to tie slaves. A broken chain is a symbol of becoming free.


The bundle of rods or fasces- It is the symbol of Strength which lies in Unity. One rod can be easily broken, but not an entire bundle.


The eye within a triangle is radiating light- It stands for knowledge. The radiating light will drive away the clouds of ignorance.


Sceptre- Symbol of royal power


Snake is biting its tail to form a ring – it is the Symbol of Eternity as the ring has neither beginning nor end.


Red Phrygian cap- this is the cap worn by the slave to become free.


Blue-white-red- These are the national colours of France.


The winged woman- The law, is personified through Winged-woman.


The Law Tablet- The law is the same for all, and all are equal before it.
