Name the most successful political club of France. Describe any four changes brought about by the Government set-up after the fall of the Jacobin government?

Jacobins Club was one of the most successful political clubs. This club has derived its name from the St. Jacob in Paris. This club included people like – shopkeepers, artisans, daily wage workers, etc. Maximilian Robespierre was the leader of the Jacobins club. He believed that all those who stood up against the Republic were his enemies like nobles, clergy, and members of the opposite party and also arrested and imprisoned them.

The four changes brought about by the Government set-up after the fall of the Jacobin government were:

• When Jacobin club fell, wealthy section of the society took the control and introduced the new constitution.

• According to this constitution, non-propertied sections of society were not allowed to vote. This was for the two elected legislative councils.

• An executive made up of five members were appointed known as Directory. Their main agenda was to see that power should not concentrate on the hands of the one person like in case of Maximilian Robespierre, leader of Jacobins club.

• The ideas of Equality before law and of fraternity put forth by the directory rules of the Government inspired people worldwide and further motivated political movements in France.
