The four social and political factors that led to the outbreak of the revolutionary protest in France were:

• France had the Monarchial form of government which resulted in power being in the hands of the king.


• The state was facing financial problems due to the frequent wars. To meet these expenses and to maintain court, army, government universities and offices, the state increased the taxes.


Clergy and nobles enjoyed certain privileges whereas taxes were paid only by the third estate. The Peasants also paid taxes to the Church called Tithes. It included direct tax called Taille and other Indirect tax which were imposed on the product of consumption like salt and tobacco.


• Only active citizens who were men above 25 years and pays taxes had the right to vote. Remaining were the passive citizens and women and children are not allowed to vote.
