Describe the divisions in French society.

The French society was divided into three estates which were:

• First estate – Clergy. They were given certain privileges as they don’t have to pay taxes.

• Second estate – Nobility. They also enjoyed the same privileges like clergy but they were also given feudal privileges according to which they asked dues from the peasants. They have to work in the house and field of their lord.

• Third estate - Big businessman, courts, lawyers, etc, peasants and artisan and small peasants, landless labourers and servants. They have to pay taxes and other direct and indirect taxes to the government.
