Q4 of 80 Page 42

The sum of two consecutive odd numbers is 56. Find the numbers.

The difference between two consecutive odd numbers = 2.

Let one of the two consecutive odd numbers be x.

The other odd number = x + 2.

The sum of the two numbers = 56.

According to the given condition,

x + (x + 2) = 56

x + x + 2 = 56

2x + 2 = 56

2x = 56 – 2 (Transposing 2 to RHS)

2x = 54

x = (Transposing 2 to RHS)

x = 27

The first odd number = x = 27

The other odd number = x + 2 = 27 + 2 = 29

The two consecutive odd numbers whose sum is 56 are 27 and 29.
