Given x2 – 14x + 45


Using (x + a)(x + b) = x2 + (a + b)x + ab … (I)


⇒ x2 – 14x + 45= x2 + ( – 9 – 5)x + ( – 9)×( – 5)


On comparing with (I),


a = – 9 and b = – 5


So, x2 – 14x + 45= (x – 9)(x – 5)
