Factorize :

x2 – 14xy + 24y2

Given x2 – 14xy + 24y2


Using (x + a)(x + b) = x2 + (a + b)x + ab … (I)


⇒ x2 – 14xy + 24y2 = x2 + ( – 12y – 2y)x + ( – 12y)×( – 2y)


On comparing with (I),


a = – 12 and b = – 2


So, x2 – 14xy + 24y2 = (x – 12y)(x – 2y)
