Q12 of 54 Page 77

Present ages of p and q is in the ratio 3:4. Four years hence q will be five years older than p. What is the present age of p?

Ratio of present ages of p and q = 3:4

Let ratio be x

Age of p = 3x

Age of q = 4x

After 4 years

Age of p = 3x + 4

Age of q = 4x + 4

q is 5 years older than p

Age of q = 5 + 3x + 4

4x + 4 = 5 + 3x + 4

x = 5

Age of p = 3x

= 3×5 = 15 years
