Sushil is now 4 times as old as Sunil. Five years ago Sushil was 7 times as old as Sunil was then. Find out the present ages of both of them.

Let Sushil’s age be x and Sunil's age be y

According to the question,


x = 4y ……(1)


5 years ago


Sushil’s age = x – 5


Sunil’s age = y – 5


According to the question,


x – 5 = 7 (y – 5)


Put value of x from (1)


4y – 5 = 7y – 35


35 – 5 = 7y – 4y


30 = 3y


y = 30/3


y = 10


Put y = 10 in (1)


x = 4 × 10


x = 40


Therefore, Sushil's age is 40 years and Sunil’s age is 10 years.
