Q15 of 54 Page 77

The denominator of the fraction is 3 more than the numerator. If 5 is added to both the parts, the resulting fraction is equivalent to 4 by 5. Find the fraction.

Let numerator be x and denominator be y

According to question

Y = 3 + x ……(1)

If 5 is added to both parts the resulting fraction is equivalent to

5(x + 5) = 4 (x + 8)

5x + 25 = 4x + 32

5x – 4x = 32 – 25

x = 7

Put x = 7 in (1)

y = 3 + x

y = 3 + 7

y = 10
