Vikas is three years older than Deepika. Six years ago Vikas's age was four times Deepika's age. Find the ages of Deepika and Vikas.

Let Deepika's age be x, and Vikas’s age be y.

Since, Vikas is 3 years older than Deepika


Therefore, Vikas's age y = x + 3 ……(1)


6 years ago


Vikas’s age = x + 3 – 6


= x – 3


Deepika’s age = x – 6


Vikas’s age was 4 times Deepika’s age


Therefore, Vikas’s age


x – 3 = 4 (x – 6)


x – 3 = 4x – 24


– 3 + 24 = 4x – x


21 = 3x


x = 7


From (1)


y = x + 3


y = 7 + 3


y = 10


Therefore, Deepika’s age is 7 years and Vikas’s age is 10 years.
