Determine whether (i) x = 1, (ii) x = 3 are the solutions of the equation x2 — 5x + 4 = 0 or not.

Put both the values of x in the equation.


When x = 1


12 – 5(1) + 4


1 – 5 + 4


= 0


Therefore, it is the solution to the equation.


When x = 3


32 – 5(3) + 4 = 0


9 – 15 + 4


= –2


Therefore, it is not the solution to the equation.
